Reading a County Through Its Old Maps
A finding aid for reading a county through its old maps before reading its histories.
A county map is a record, not just an illustration. North Renfrew appears in the county atlas sheets digitized by the Canadian County Atlas Digital Project, where lot lines, concessions and hamlet names sit underneath the roads a resident knows today. Reading that survey grid first changes how council minutes, census tables and the former rail corridor make sense.
How to open a sheet
The reading order that works on an atlas plate is the same one this Atlas applies to a municipal file. For the plate-by-plate version of that method, The Cartographer's Folio opens one map at a time and asks who made it, when, what it shows and why it matters. The order sounds simple because it is: the discipline is in not skipping the first two questions.
What the grid can prove
A dated sheet fixes the shape of settlement at a moment: which lots were claimed, which hamlets carried a post office mark, where the survey drew the line a road would later follow. The Renfrew sheets in the county atlas project and the map collections at the Archives of Ontario are the kinds of holdings a reader checks before trusting a later summary.
What it cannot prove
An old map does not record why a store closed or who lived in a house after the survey. It shows the drawn record of its own date, so the atlas plate belongs next to the census and the minute book, not in place of them. The Atlas keeps that order: sheet first, then the records that test it.
